Celebration of International Museum Day on May 18, 2023

To celebrate the International Museum Day, the Department of Archaeology of Cotton University took a special permission from the Director, Assam State Museum to visit the museum on 18th May 2023. Students of PG 2nd and 4th semesters, research scholars and faculty members visited the Assam State Museum. On arrival at 11.30 am on May 18, 2023, the team received an enthusiastic welcome from the officials of the museum. The Director, Y.S. Wunglengton gave an introductory speech briefing about the significance of the International Museum Day. He further informed the participants about the wide collection of artefacts from all over north-eastern parts of India in the galleries present at State Museum. Ms. Loly Hazarika, Guide Lecturer-cum-Exhibition Officer informed the audience about a brief history of the museum along with the importance of all the galleries and the exhibits therein. The students then visited the galleries such as sculpture gallery, epigraphy gallery, numismatic and metallic sculpture gallery, arms and ammunition, pre and proto-history and terracotta gallery, village of Assam gallery, nature museum gallery and the newly opened galleries where the famous Mayurpakhi khel-naon (boat) is exhibited. Ms. Jaugathi Basaumatry, Assistant Professor of the department conducted an offsite lecture on the pre-history and proto-history as well as natural history gallery. While Dr. Ritika Sahu, Assistant Professor of the department briefed the students on the collections of sculptures, epigraphy, and numismatics present in the museum.
